Technology Executive and Entrepreneur Dennis Pilarinos is no stranger to investing in novel ideas. Dennis has been working at the forefront of technological innovation for over 20 years holding senior roles at companies like Microsoft, Apple and selling his last company to Apple.

Bringing his zest for novel solutions alongside his passion for conservation, Dennis sat down with us to discuss his hope of using his business insights and gains to support NBSF with the goal of helping advance protection for endangered old-growth forests in BC.

Johnny Rodgers, founding employee of Slack, grew up in Ontario and moved to BC in 2005 where his passion for environmental advocacy ignited with his proximity to the endangered old-growth temperate forests of the province’s coastal regions. Both he and his wife, Jessica, became deeply impacted by their encounters with old growth and motivated to help protect them upon their growing awareness of the imminent industrial activities threatening what little remained of these ecosystems. Now parents to two little boys, they have committed themselves to helping preserve these imperiled forests for future generations.

The Foundation has purchased an exceptionally diverse old-growth forest on private lands to gift to the band with a conservation covenant and is also helping to fund their 350 square kilometre Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) proposal that would protect 125 square kilometres of old-growth forests in their territory.

The IPCA would protect about 350 square kilometres of land in their territory, including 125 square kilometres of old-growth forest.

The Nature-Based Solutions Foundation has completed a purchase of what could be the most diverse old-growth forest in BC, located in the Fraser Canyon about 15 km south of Lytton in the unceded territory of the Kanaka Bar Indian Band. The private property was purchased in August by the new conservation organization, which intends to gift the land with a conservation covenant to the Kanaka Bar Band, who are working on major conservation projects throughout their territory.

Over 12,500 hectares of some of BC’s most endangered and diverse old-growth forests will be protected in in the territory of the Kanaka Bar Band, a Nlaka'pamux First Nation in the Fraser Canyon near Lytton, when a major new Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) is finalized. The Kanaka Bar Band announced their vision today to protect a total of about 35,000 hectares of their unceded lands in British Columbia in this IPCA.

A new conservation foundation is working to provide Indigenous and other land-based communities with funds to protect endangered ecosystems and build economic alternatives to the logging of at-risk old-growth forests.

A new national organization has just been launched by several BC conservationists to help address critical funding gaps to support the creation of new protected areas in the most endangered ecosystems.
