Land Acquisitions

We have successfully acquired three private properties within the proposed Kanaka Bar Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA); Across the River, Jackass Mountain, and Old Man Jack. Together comprising 10 parcels totalling 57 hectares of ecologically rich valley land, they represent some of the last remaining private properties within a 320 km² conservation landscape that Kanaka Bar calls zuminstm e tmíxʷ kt ƛ̓əq̓ƛ̓áq̓tn̓  , or “we care for the lands of T’eqt’aqtn”.

Why This Land Matters

These properties sit in a rare and remarkable place: a transition zone where coastal and interior ecosystems meet, home to an outstanding mix of old-growth species. They fall within the Interior Douglas-fir biogeoclimatic zone, one of the least protected ecosystems in BC. The wider IPCA, of which these properties are a part, forms a conservation landscape contiguous with the Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park.

The Work Continues

Each parcel will be protected through a legally binding conservation agreement. In alignment with Kanaka Bar’s stewardship vision, the lands will support low-impact cultural uses, traditional food and medicine harvesting, and potential cultural education opportunities for generations to come.

Long-term stewardship will be supported by the NBSF’s Stewardship Endowment Funds.

How You Can Help

We’re still fundraising to fully complete the stewardship endowment, the final piece needed to ensure these lands stay protected and that Kanaka Bar’s leadership in caring for their territory endures.
